2015 Annual Meeting


NPHA members participated in a robust discussion with five members of the NPS Commercial Services team, under the new leadership of Brian Borda.  The discussions were focused on four key topics:  

1)  How to make prospectuses catalysts for great offers and reduce costs to NPS and concessioners.

2)  How to encourage and reward excellence in concessioner performance.

3)  How to respond well to changes in visitors, technology and during the concessions contract period, including how to expedite trials and modifications of visitor services.

4) Adding concessioner-provided services in units currently without concessioners that can help increase and distribute overall visitation to the national park system.

At the conclusion of the productive exchange of information and ideas, Chairman Terry MacRae and Brian agreed to increase communications and sharing of information through meetings and calls during the next year, including meetings in key parks and at key regional offices.

Date: March 23-25, 2015

Location: NPHA Office and Nearby Locations, 1200 G Street, NW, Washington, DC 20005

Theme: Concessioners and National Parks in 2016 and Beyond will allow national park concessioners, the NPS and others to agree on strategies to make 2016 successful in attracting and serving well new park visitors. Sessions will include:       

► Indepth conversations with NPS Commercial Services Team

► Indepth conversations with NPS/NPF Centennial Team

► Discussions with the U.S. General Accountability Office NPS Study Team

► Discussions with Key Members of Congress and staff

► Discussions of Association Goals and Priorities

Details: Our meeting will begin on Monday, March 23. After informal meetings in the morning, we will meet with the GAO team beginning at 1 PM at the Capital Hilton Hotel.  We will hold a reception and dinner that evening at Bobby Van’s Grill.  The next morning will include the NPHA annual meeting, sessions with the NPS Commercial Services Team, a session with the NPF/NPS Centennial Team just prior to the launch of Find My Park – the NPS Centennial Campaign – on April 2, a meeting with Congressional leaders in the U.S House of Representatives and a CONPAC evening event.  Wednesday will be a half-day meeting on specific Centennial and NPHA initiatives.  Optional afternoon and evening events will focus on the U.S. Senate leaders active on park issues.  

Lodging is available at Capital Hilton, 1001 16th Street, NW during and for several days before and after the NPHA meeting.  NPHA members and meeting participants are offered a special rate of $299 plus taxes and fees.  Reservations must be made by February 26 using the registration form or through NPHA’s office – email Cathy Ahern at cahern@funoutdoors.com or call (202) 682-9530.  Room availability in DC for our dates is very limited.  Contact us now.

Transportation:  Excellent transportation access to the Capital Hilton is available through Ronald Reagan Washington National (5 miles), Washington Dulles (28 miles) and Baltimore-Washington International (32 miles) Airports as well as AMTRAK service to Union Station (2 miles).  METRO is 2 blocks away (McPherson Square Station).  The NPHA office is located directly above the Metro Center station – use the 13th and G Street exit.

Registration Fee:   

$500 for NPHA Regular Members - initial participant

$450 for NPHA Regular Members - subsequent participants

$500 for NPHA Associate Members

$250 for guests and spouses attending only social functions

$800 for non-members

$150 for National Park Service Employees (limited meals)

Attire: Business attire for all functions.  March weather in DC is variable, but anticipate highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s and a reasonable chance of rain during portions of our meeting.

Displays: Regular and associate members are invited to display information on new products, promotions, and offered services.  Special focus will be on healthy foods and the application of new technologies to park visits.  Arrangements for displays should be made through the National Park Hospitality Association at (202) 682-9530.
